Big news
Today I'm allowed to tell you that I've been awarded a two-year Fellowship by the Literature Board of the Australia Council, to write the next two novels I'm planning.
This means that for 2 years from February 2006, I'll be a full-time writer. Having been a full-time writer before (but, like, a really, really poor one) I know that this is not necessarily a perfectly wonderful lifestyle; but I'm hoping that I can do it better this time and make sure I exercise, eat and drink right, and regularly interact with real people so that I don't blow either myself or my family apart.
I am very, very pleased.

That's not small! That's huuuuuge!
Congratulations, and well-deserved!
congratulations! that's wonderful news. good luck with getting the balance right.
Thank you, Dave and Deb and Perry. It will be very nice to kiss the gas company goodbye, bless 'em.
Actually, this blog wasn't going to happen until I landed the grant - it was one of the things I put in my application about how I would document and promote the books I said I'd write. And then I thought, 'It takes FIVE MINUTES to set up a blog; what are you waiting for?' Plus, Justine Larbalestier was jumping up and down in my peripheral vision saying 'Youshouldblog, youshouldblog, youshouldblog', so I started. I'll have to mark the beginning of the Arts-Council sponsored blog with a logo. (Or an animated popping-champagne-bottle.)
woooooot! Make sure you buy decent socks for bumming around the house in.
Er, I mean, creating artistic artsies in.
My totally hot chef and personal trainer Steven says I should tell you that I'm now rich enough to buy INdecent socks.
But I think that might be for erotic artsies, not YA. And the letter says very definitely "Young adult litricha".
Oh well done! Any chance you'll visit the UK? I'll happily contribute bed and board to the Margo Lanagan fellowship.
(I live four underground stops from the British Library).
Great news! I can't wait to read the fruits of your focused labours.
And I'm sure you'll make time for yourself. Scheule it in, like lunch and tea.
Wow -- this is fantastic news! Congratulations.
Congratulations Margo - I'm green with envy. Just think you'll be able to go for whole days at a time without needing to get out of your pyjamas! How wonderful.
Congratulations and well deserved. :)
Farah, you temptress-with-a-Tube-station! It's entirely possible I will be over in your hemisphere next year, but it's likely I'll have a partner and child with me, so we might not fit with you. However, I hope we'll get to meet.
Suzanne, Justine, Gwenda, Susan, Chance - thank you!
*adds SOCKS (decent and indecent), DISCIPLINE, CHAMPAGNE, PYJAMAS, R-T-W PLANE TICKET to shopping list*
Partner and child could certainly be accomodated for a week, assuming that all are cat friendly. Possibly longer depending on the timing.
